This iconic piece of outerwear is an integral part of your autumn (and later spring) wardrobe as it’s the perfect go-between cover up for the transitional period from summer to the colder months. It’s not quite cold enough to crack out the faux fur coat but sometimes you want an alternative to your leather jacket – particularly if you’re going for a chicer feel to your look.
Particularly now in fashion, we’re seeking pieces to add to our wardrobes which have a classic and timeless feel – something we can re-wear year after year and style with different outfits. Enter the trench coat; it can be worn with a strong suit look for work and keep you covered as you change into a dress for after work drinks. It’s also the perfect piece for elevating the casual jeans and jumper ensemble. You might think you can do without one but, trust me, life and your fashion choices become so much easier once you give in and invest in one of these beauties.
How to Style It
If you’re donning your trench in an attempt to look like you’ve made an effort when minimal effort was actually concerned, the trench coat is perfect. Whether you’re wearing jeans or a dress underneath, belting the trench with its own band – or a contrasting style – adds immediate chic to your outfit and finishing with some statement jewellery transforms this ‘I couldn’t really be bothered’ vibe into a whole look.
Yes, I just said your trench coat can completely transform your casual jeans and t-shirt or jumper outfit choice but if jeans is where you’re at, why not switch up the classic blue for a pair of white? I’ve never agreed with not being able to wear white after Labour Day and can’t think of a better autumnal pairing than white, that gorgeous tan tone of your trench and some heeled boots. You’re good to go.
Playing with levels and layering is another way to work the trench. Let’s face it, fashion is all about experimenting so be bold and try out different lengths to your outfit: pair mini dresses with knee-high boots and have the trench coat over the top to clash all these different levels together (and it also makes sure you don’t get too cold!)
I’d love to know how you’re styling your trench coat this season so let me know in the comments below.
