Here’s my definition of style: Something that says who you are, without you having to say it yourself. My style has evolved so much over the years. You name it, I’ve worn it. This includes some horrible and cringeworthy trends. Luckily evidence of those eras are tucked away safely in my old photo album – back then, we didn’t have social media. Thank the lord!!! By the time social media reached every corner of the globe, I was old enough to know what works on my body what doesn’t. And then that definition dawned on me – the style that I grew into wearing was what made me feel like I was wearing the best version of myself!
I remember clearly when I was a poor university student. Every Friday I would go to the fabric store and then come home and make an outfit to wear for Saturday night. I would spend $10 to $15 MAX on all my materials, and then spend hours on my sewing machine making little outfits so I could go clubbing the next day.
They were simple outfits and I usually wore them for one night only. I couldn’t afford expensive clothes so I decided to make them myself! Even with these cheap outfits that I put together, I was still getting compliments from people. Even when I didn’t have a lot of clothes, I was happy because I was creating nice outfits for next to nothing. That made me happy. I’m a strong believer that you can look amazing at any price. You don’t need to buy expensive things to look stylish.
So over the years, I have learn a few things that work – so here are my top tips for looking stylish everyday:
- Invest in basic pieces: A great blazer will last you a long time – find a cut that works for your body and buy them in your two favourite basic colours. Also slowly check these off the list: a good trench coat, nude heels, and a trusty black hand bag. These are all great building blocks to a stylish and well finished outfit. I’m styling this trench with nude heels, but it would also look great with a pair of white sneakers as well.
- Stick with Neutral Colours: Trust me, I’m not scared of colours. I love colours! But for me, my investment pieces are always in black, beige, white and grey. These colours are much easier to work with and will always look timeless and classic.
- Make the outfit your own: I routinely roll up my jacket sleeves to give it a bit of an edge. I’m usually known for wearing shorts and heels, but it’s not alway possible to wear shorts in London!!! So I have to make trousers cool. I love the little buckle details on these trousers. It gives the outfit a little something extra.
- Self-confidence: Wake up a little earlier so you can wash and blow dry your hair. Spend 10 minutes painting your nails so you feel confident. I am confident in who I am as a person because I tend to welcome positivity and shut out negativity, and this stops me from worrying about criticism from those haven’t earned my ear – try and do this too, you will not be able to hold yourself well and show your true style if you’re worried about being judged. If you’re not confident, then what I would do is close your eyes and before you leave the house, say this out loud: “I am beautiful and I’m going to kill it today!” That should get you pumped up so you can strut out the door like you mean it!
Thank you so much for reading guys! I would love to hear some of your tips on what you do to look stylish everyday!
