If you’ve been dreaming of a safari experience that strips everything back to just you and the bush, let me introduce you to Kapama Buffalo Camp.
I spent two nights here, and it completely changed the way I think about what a safari can feel like.
The Smallest Property on Kapama — and That’s the Magic
Buffalo Camp is the smallest and most intimate lodge on Kapama Private Game Reserve, tucked into the Greater Kruger area of South Africa. With only ten luxury tented suites, it has this rare quality that bigger lodges simply can’t replicate — the feeling that you’re the only person there.
From the moment you walk in, the staff greet you with such genuine warmth that you immediately feel at home. It’s quiet. Really quiet. Not in a sterile, empty way, but in that deep, grounding way where you become hyper-aware of every sound around you. The rustle of leaves, a bird call in the distance, the snap of a branch somewhere below your deck.
This is not your typical hotel experience. This is something else entirely.
Sleeping in the Bush — Like, Actually in It
The tents are gorgeous. Raised on stilted wooden decks and connected by elevated walkways through the treetops, they have every luxury amenity you could want — air conditioning, a Nespresso machine, minibar, beautiful linens, an incredible bathroom. But the thing that makes it so special isn’t what’s inside the tent. It’s what’s outside.
From our balcony, we had frequent visitors. Kudus wandering past, monkeys swinging through the trees, and all kinds of wildlife just going about their day right in front of us. You don’t have to go looking for the animals here. They come to you.
And then there’s the night.
Lying in bed, falling asleep to the sound of hyenas calling and lions roaring in the darkness — I have never experienced anything like it in my life. A lion’s roar at night is something that travels right through you. It vibrates through the bush, and you feel it in your chest. It’s primal and wild, and honestly? It makes you feel so incredibly alive. There is nothing, nothing, like hearing a lion roar as you drift off to sleep in a canvas tent in the African bush.
Two Game Drives a Day, Every Day
Just like the other Kapama properties, Buffalo Camp includes two game drives daily — one in the early morning and one in the late afternoon into the evening. The rangers are experienced and passionate, and being on a private reserve means you have the freedom to stay out after dark searching for nocturnal wildlife.
But the difference at Buffalo Camp is the energy you come back to. After a drive, you return to that stillness, that peace. There’s no buzz of a big lodge. Just the bush, your tent, and the sounds of the wild.
The Food, the Fire, the People
I need to talk about the food because it was amazing. Meals are served à la carte under a thatched canopy during the day, and in the evenings, dinner moves to the traditional boma — an outdoor fire pit setting that is pure magic. One evening we had a special campfire dinner, and it was one of those moments where everything just felt right. Good food, a crackling fire, the sounds of the bush all around, and incredible people to share it with.
Speaking of people — I made friends with pretty much every member of staff by the time I left. With only ten tents and a small team, the service is genuinely personal. They remember your name, your drink, what you loved on the game drive that morning. It’s the kind of hospitality that doesn’t feel rehearsed. It feels real.
The Pool and the In-Between Moments
There’s a gorgeous rim-flow pool surrounded by sun loungers and lush bush, and it’s the perfect place to spend the middle of the day between game drives. It’s elevated, peaceful, and you feel completely immersed in nature even while you’re relaxing with a drink in hand.
These in-between moments are what set Buffalo Camp apart. It’s not just about the drives. It’s about what the camp feels like when you’re just existing in it.
A Completely Different Energy
I’ve stayed at other Kapama properties, and they’re all beautiful in their own right. But Buffalo Camp is a completely different feel. It’s rawer. More connected to the land. If the other lodges are about luxury with a view, Buffalo Camp is about luxury within the wild.
If you’re the kind of traveller who wants to be truly amongst nature — not just looking at it from a distance — this is your property. It’s intimate, it’s immersive, and it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.
Two nights was enough to know: I’ll be back.
