How to create your own dream walk-in wardrobe

Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

I definitely wouldn’t be quite the fashion-lover if it weren’t for my favourite TV series, Sex and the City. It’s a bit cliche, but so what – watching Carrie Bradshaw unwrap gifts and purchases in her modest little NYC apartment and then step out onto the streets of the West Village ready to face the town was a serious inspiration for me. I think over the years my subconscious has been fixated on her character, and while I don’t quite live in The Big Apple just yet, there are so many aspects of what I’m doing right now that allow me to dream big, no matter how simple or extravagant the little gift-wrapped parcels that arrive at my doorstep may be.

As anyone who has followed my Snapchat for a long time will know, I pretty much lose it over two scenes from the first Sex and the City film. First, when Carrie plays dress-up in her apartment in front of her girl squad, and then when Big builds her the master closet in their new penthouse. (AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!)

Back to reality!!! Ok, I don’t own a New York City penthouse, and I don’t have an unlimited interior decorating budget. However, I do have a genuine lust for fashion and it would be sad to build a collection of outfits and accessories and then just stuff them in an old wardrobe! So this year I gave my husband the good news that I was taking over our guest bedroom (sorry guests!!!), and–with some elbow grease and a couple of thousand dollars–I built my dream walk-in wardrobe.

The guest room before photo. It had an old built in that Scott had to pull down. (Thank god for a handyman hubs!)

All mine are squashed and struggle to get them back to it’s original shape so that has definitely given me some inspo.

I have a pretty small walk-in closet but still it feels so much more organized than a normal closet plus now you have a way better overview of what you actually have haha.

Best, simple and affordable walk-in closet I’ve ever seen yet !
Great job ! Defnitely my got-to post as soon as I get the space to build one… Thank YOU for that ! :)x

  36. Tobias Armstrong on May 9, 2016 at 11:06 pm

I really liked how you painted the floor white. I feel like it made a big difference as far as how big the room feels, and white is such a cool color for making things feel minimalist. I feel like building a custom wardrobe in a very similar way would be a great way to open up my own personal closet. Thanks for sharing!

  37. Samantha on May 11, 2016 at 12:30 am

ASH ! I actually keep showing all my friends this post. I MEAN DREAM CLOSET ! Will be keeping this in mind when I finally get a new closet !

    • Miss Gunner on June 12, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Hehehe thank you babe!!! I had like 250 white wooden hangers and 100 clip ones for shorts and another 150 hangers for pants!! Lol it’s cheaper to buy in bulk!!!???

  40. Melanie May on April 5, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Ash, your wardrobe is an absolute dream and definitely rivals Carrie’s!! I’m saving this blog for my own walk-in wardrobe (one day) xx
